COLOUR INSPIRATION FOR AUTUMN-WINTER 2025

Fresh season, fresh shades

As the temperature drops and the nights draw in, we turn our attention to creating spaces within the home that feel cossetted and warm, using a playful colour palette grounded in tradition - but applied in a contemporary spirit.

This concept of mixing depth with an easy sophistication underpins our trends and inspirations this season. From the gentle elegance of blackened teals, deep rusts, burgundies and metal accents through to the soft pinks and blues typically associated with warmer months, but used in a deeper saturation.

Above all, we see the new autumn/winter season as a time to experiment with colours and celebrate creativity, whether it be with a coloured ceiling, picking out architectural details or adding your own, or embracing beautifully partnered shades that will surprise and delight.

These are the magic months where imagination, courage and practicality collide.

Colour Capping

Pulling the often neglected fifth wall – the ceiling – into a coordinated look that feels considered is a gentle way to add cohesion and polish. This is a finish that can be quietly impactful, even in a palette of neutrals, where an off-white wall colour is capped with a slightly more saturated hue in the same tone, gently drawing attention to period detailing while making the ceiling an integral part of the décor.

Colour capping in this way also works with bolder, knocked-back jewel tones or a palette of warming autumnals, ranging from buff through to rust. A soft hue for walls moving into a mid-tone for cornicing and topped by a warm terracotta ceiling, creates an instantly pulled-together feel which can be followed through via soft furnishings and window treatments.

Expert Advice - West Facing Room

Every room in the home is affected by natural light, with west-facing rooms receiving cooler light in the morning, progressing to mellow warmth in the afternoon.

Choosing blue-based tones, whether a soft sage or a gentle sea green, is a clever way of balancing out the light in such a room, offering a cooler finish which gently offsets a highly diffused autumnal glow. Painting the ceiling and woodwork in a tonal colour variant and introducing warmer blush elements results in a harmonious feel that strikes just the right note between warmth and earthiness.

Designer Details

If your room holds interesting features, pick out the architectural details for a crisp look. This is an approach that lends itself well to schemes with panelling or simple beading. Try subtly highlighting those shapes with a more saturated version of the wall colour - such as a butterscotch tone complemented by a bolder accent tangerine and keep accessories and artefacts pared-back for maximum impact.

For an added unexpected verve, you could also paint unobtrusive architectural detailing - like the underside of an entryway or door frame - in an opposing hue. A soft blue-sage architectural accent against an apricot-butterscotch wall is an ideal seasonal refresh.

Perfect Partnering

Sometimes the gentlest of pairings speaks volumes, creating a scheme that feels serene, intentional and quietly confident. This is a look that works especially well with warm-toned neutrals, from sands, shells and clays to muddy pinks. Colour blocking a primary wall in a slight tonal variation adds depth and flow to a quiet space, and choosing an off-white for the ceiling creates heritage appeal with trims and accessories picked out in varying tones.

Decorative interest to extension or new build

Try reinventing the idea of a classic border with a surprising repeat, such as a row of hourglass shapes underscored by a line of vivid colour, or a painted accent in an unexpected place - like a diagonal repeat - to draw attention to decorative details such as a fire surround. Using a palette of forest green, mustard and clay will add a playful seasonal gravitas.
